Literature Text

Hold on, hold fast--
Never change your mind.
That's how it works for you,
Isn't it?
You can never see anything
But the clearest, starkest colors.
There's no room in your heart
For shades of grey.

You have no sympathy.
You take, and give nothing.
You're a swirling sucking void
That never belonged in my life.

When I was little,
I loved you dearly.
I wanted to please you, somehow.
When you could control me,
We were the best of friends.

But one day I realized
What a monster you were.
A giant, keeping me
Locked in a pearly cage.
As soon as I rebelled,
Your true nature erupted.

You're volcanic, Sir Void,
When the lava stirs within you.
How can so much anger
Reside in that rigid form?

You stole the things I cared about,
And told me to care for you.

What a strange creature you are.
Begging for love
When you have none to give.
That wouldn't be so bad,
If you weren't so scared of begging
That your pleas become demands.

I don't have to give you anything.
I don't love you, owe you, or need you.
We are finished, you and I,
Forever torn apart.

I wouldn't have ripped away from you
If you hadn't cut me off.
A poem for someone I used to know.
